TEACHING THROUGH TECHNOLOGY IN POETRY

Multimodality in Teaching English Poetry

This research paper highlights the impact on teaching and learning poetry using ICT tools

like Photo Story 3, Windows Movie Maker and Hypertexts. Photo story was a free application

which can be used to create vivid visual presentations using images. The researchers used this

tool to create a video related to the poem. Rich images were used to depict the mood of the

poem and the cultural settings were brought to life using this tool. The mood reflected in the

poem was brought to life by the use of this tool. Earlier poetry teaching was a stupendous task

as it had layers of meaning and the students found it very difficult to comprehend the stanzas.

Moreover the cultural settings were different from the learners and this made the learning

of poems more complex. With the advent of the tools like the Photo Story and Moviemaker,

learning had become an enriching and engaging experience for the students. Visual poetry was

an effective means of encouraging students to enjoy the reading and discussion of poetry.

The poem ‘The Cry of the Children’ by Elizabeth Barrette Browning was introduced to

the students as a video format. Rich texts with stunning images were used in the video clip and

the students were moved to tears watching the clip as it depicted the horrific conditions of child

labour and the apathy of the industrial revolution. The visual appeal was so engaging and moving

and the students had a thorough understanding of the background of the poem and the cultural

setting in which the poet wrote the poem. One of the hallmarks of these tools was that sound

effects can be added effectively and sound tracks from music and clips from other sources can be

applied so that it appealed to their multiple senses. The teacher was able to bring the atmosphere

in the classroom which was very difficult in traditional modes of teaching poetry.
